About Us
Our Heritage
The name “Tartan” Builders was chosen not only out of respect for and in memory of our father, James McNaughton, but also represents a nod to our family’s rich tradition back through the generations to Scotland. A tartan is a woolen cloth woven in one of several patterns of plaid, especially of a design associated with a particular Scottish clan. The color pattern of the tartan used in our logo is that of the Scottish McNaughton family tartan.
For more than three generations the McNaughton family has served the communities of Chicago as premier luxury residential and commercial property developers. The Principals of Tartan Builders grew-up on the job sites of James McNaughton Builders, Inc., and returned to the development business shortly after their respective graduations from the University of Illinois.
In 2012, Tartan Builders, Inc. (TBI) was founded by brothers and Principals Ryan and Scott McNaughton. Based out of the family’s longtime office, built three decades ago in Hinsdale, IL, TBI aims to continue the sound reputation and exemplary product affiliation with the McNaughton name.
Family pride and commitment to the company extends far beyond ownership. Long-term affiliations with the trades and suppliers have allowed TBI to provide their clients with the value and quality they are looking for.
Our Vision
“To be the most respected and trusted luxury home builder, commercial property developer and property manager in the Western Suburbs of Chicago.”
